Rhinelander, Wisconsin

The city of Rhinelander, the capital of Wisconsin's north, is home to 8,000 people. Located on the border of northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, the community has a strong commercial and industrial base and serves approximately 200,000 people in the region. In the peak summer vacation months, that number reaches almost 750,000.

Rhinelander was founded in 1882 and is situated at the confluence of the Wisconsin and Pelican Rivers. The community's history is steeped in logging and has evolved to incorporate a variety of thriving industries, including medical, paper-making, packaging, defense contractors, and national research facilities. This is the only up-north community that combines a wild, natural, water-rich environment with a modern, urban-like infrastructure.

With 232 lakes within 15 minutes of Downtown Rhinelander, the Rhinelander Area is a year-round outdoor playground. It offers solitude, spectacular fall colors, excellent winter trails, and lush summers. Whether you like to boat, fish, hike or bike, snowmobile or cross-country ski, our residents live it up. The community takes pride in its blend of unspoiled natural beauty, small-town charm, and diverse commerce and industry. Rhinelander has become a premier destination for those seeking to live, learn and explore due to its countless opportunities.

Visit the city's websites to learn more about what Rhinelander has to offer: Chamber of Commerce, Explore Rhinelander, and Rhinelander City Hall.

Hodag

What is a Hodag?

According to American folklore, a Hodag resembles a large bull-horned carnivore with a row of thick spines running down its back and was said to have emerged from the ashes of cremated oxen. A native to Wisconsin and often referred to as “fearsome critter”, the discovery of The Hodag is focused mainly around the city of Rhinelander and has been deemed the mascot of Wisconsin’s northwoods.

Thanks to our Ladies league for creating our Hodag rock on the course which has now become the favorite photo opportunity.
